The History of the PDF Standard
How Adobe's internal Camelot project became the global standard for electronic documents.
Project Camelot
In 1991, Adobe co-founder John Warnock initiated "The Camelot Project" with the goal of enabling anyone to capture documents from any application, send electronic versions of these documents anywhere, and view and print them on any machine.
PDF 1.0 was announced at Comdex in 1992. Initially, it faced stiff competition from formats like DjVu and Envoy, and Adobe Acrobat was not free. The turning point was releasing the Acrobat Reader for free in 1993.
Key Standardizations (ISO)
By 2008, Adobe handed control of the PDF specification to the ISO (International Organization for Standardization), resulting in ISO 32000-1. Today, PDF/A, PDF/E, and PDF/X serve specific industrial niches.
